The wonderful knee anatomy |
Well, I'm 9 months post accident and waiting for a surgery date to fix my torn ACL, MCL, PCL. I guess I should explain how this all came about in the first place. On December 31st, 2009, I was skiing with my family at Titus Mountain in Malone New York. At 1:40 in the afternoon, while attempting to help my 8 year old daughter snow plow, it all happened. My left ski caught an edge and well down I went. I knew the moment that it happened that my knee was history!!! A snowmobile ride down the ski hill, and a few x-rays and mri's later, I was told that I had a Grade III tear (complete) of my ACL, PCL, MCL with damage to my meniscus as well. In the week to follow the injury, my leg was bruised from mid thigh to big toe as it resembled at tree trunk. I've been through a full leg cast to immobilize the knee for the first few weeks. I've also seen months of my zimmer brace, JAS (Joint Active Systems Brace) and Don Joy hinged metal brace. I can now walk fine, yet I have a very unstable knee. I've gone through months of physio to slowly regain the flexion and extension in my knee.
My case is being reviewed by a few Orthopedic Surgeons to decide on what type of operation is best for my knee. Multiligament Reconstruction vs. ACL to start and assess as we go!!! I know how difficult rehabilitation from complete reconstruction is, as I have read many articles, journals and blogs of people who have gone through the same thing. I will keep everyone updated on what the decision is and I cross my fingers that it all gets going soon.
